Hi,
I have a 1979 vette with a 400 transmission. (automatic) I see where my leak is coming from but don't know how to go about fixing it. There is a sensor coming from just above the transmission pan on the drivers side that is leaking very steadily. It doesnt screw in from what I can tell. It apears that it just pops out which leads me to believe that theres a gromet that is bad. I havent taken it out yet. I thought it would be best to seek help from here first before i make it worse. (trying to learn before i have to learn the hard way). Some buddies of mine in the area insisted that it was a kickdown sensor.... Is that what it is? If so what is the technical name? What do I do about fixing this? Dealer parts or something from local auto parts store? Also there is no wires connecting to this at the present time nor have I ever seen one to it. What wire goes to it? A schmatic would help. I've googled everything that I could and searched through my manual. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thankyou very much.
I do not have all the answers to your questions but I do know that the 1979 used a TH350, not a 400. So unless someone changed the tranny to a 400, the TH350 does not use the electric kickdown sensor that the 400 uses. There are other areas that leak, such as where the speedo cable or the shifter attaches to the tranny. If you could post a picture that would help.
There's an o-ring that seals that and if memory serves, it's the elec. kick-down connection. It's possible to pull it out with pliers rather than removing pan but if it comes out too quick and the connected wire pops back into trans., you'll end up removing pan anyway. Sometimes the three ears that hold it in become brittle and one or more will break off. I used to use a short 9/16" socket to compress three prongs while pan is off when removing plastic plug.
