I am building a 68 427 and have a 168 tooth flywheel from a 454 that I would like to use but have heard that some of the 454's are externally balanced. If this is true how can I tell if it's going to be a problem?
Yes,..454 flywheels (and balancers) are used to help balance the crank since there wasn't enough room in the crank-case for the 454 crank's counterweights,..hence, "externally balanced".
427's flywheels are neutrally balanced since a 427 crank is "internally balanced".

The 454 flywheel could be rebalanced to take the offset weight out of the flywheel. I took a 427 neutral balanced flywheel and had it offset balanced for the 454.
They could neutral balance that wheel.

Retail at local Advance Auto Parts chain store; brand is Perfection Clutch:
Both are flywheels & NOT flexplates; both for 2 piece rear main seal cranks w/ 3.58" bolt circle.
Both NEUTRAL flywheels fit either 350 sbc or 427 BBC.
Perfection P/N 506504 has 168T, weighs about 30 lbs & cost about $99.
Perfection P/N 506516 has 153T, weighs about 16 lbs & cost about $65.
If you can run the lighter 153T setup (starter, bellhousing etc) ... your motor will rev noticeably quicker. FYI ... 153T aka "L88" flywheel.
-edit- ENG40 should fill out profile to include an approximate geographic location. Advance auto parts store in same family as parts america, checkers, schucks & kragen.
