Hey all this one has me stumped and I think I've exacerbated the problem. I sure could use some help, please.
I rebuilt an l98 to a 383(carbed). I ended up putting the PCV valve on the passenger side and a regular breather on the driver's side. On the original motor the pcv valve was on the driver's side.
My problem #1: an unlocated oil leak on the right side(towards rear) of the motor, below head and valve cover height. It is not coming from the sending unit in the block there(oil pressure sensor?). This leak is dramatic under high revs. Dipstick tube insertion hole? dipstick tube itself?
#2, the breather on the driver's side leaks oil. Capping off the dipstick tube seems to have made it worse(could be coincidence)
Will having the PVC valve on the wrong side of the motor cause crank case pressure to build up?
Will this same problem be the cause for oil leaking out the breather where the pcv valve once was? In other words, is the rotation of the motor flinging oil up into the breather, because a pcv valve belongs on that side instead? Breather has a baffled grommet.
The PCV valve is new so I do not think it is the culprit.
Have I created a monster by switching the pcv valve to the other side?
I can buy a breather that actually fits a pcv valve inside from Earl's performance. Will putting one of the on the driver's side and switching to a regular breather on the paseenger side fix my problem?
I dont think that the side would make any difference assuming it is hooked up right. Sounds like some serious blow by to me. You do have the valve connected to a good manifold vacuum source ?
moroso makes a breather that was designed for exactly your problem. they are made so the engine breathes and all the extra oil drips back into the motor. they actually bolt to the valve cover. you may want to drill an extra hole and run one on either side.. Oh.... and... be in a good mood when you go to buy them, there almost 60 bucks each!
Part number moroso- 68786 sumitt has a nice diagram how they install
I have a couple of Shogun breathers I got with the valve covers, they are filtered and has a check ball in them, not sure how they will work. I read an article in P Hot Rodding, "curing oil drips with a simple breather system". He's the link
