117 hours to strip and sand, 34 hours to seal, prime and block sand. Working on weekends and a couple of vac days from work, all in all it took 3 months.
I used Klean-Strip for Fiberglass to strip, very messy job. Used a 16" & 11" sanding boards. They are 2 1/4" wide and used 80 grit 3M Gold sand paper thats on a roll, sticky on the back side to stick to the boards. Then 150 grit before sealer.
Looking good. I just sprayed my 75 a couple weeks ago and there's one thing you want to make sure of before you spray your color, if you have your interior in the car make sure that the two luggage rack holes next to the rear window are taped off from inside the car. If you don't you'll have a lot of over spray to clean off your interior. One other thing, are you aware that you'll have to scuff the primer sealer before you spray the color coat ? Sealer needs to be scuffed if it sits longer than 8 hrs. Just a couple tips. :D Look forward to seeing completion pics.
My 69 looks just like that. I will be painting Friday as well . Looks like a perfect day here for painting. 78deg. low humidity. Good luck on you paint job. I don't know if you have access to a spray booth but I noticed in your picture it is in a home garage. I have done several cars that way with excellent results. Here is a couple of tips to reduce dirt. Make SURE you have MORE filtered inlet area than exhaust fan area so you will not create a vacuum and pull dust and dirt from all of the cracks and crevices(that's where most the dirt is).By doing this you will have a nice flow of air through the shop. Also ground the car and spray gun to avoid static charge.
I'm not going to paint the vette myself. I thought about it for a long time. I feel I could do OK. I got where I could lay down the K36 very smooth. You sand everything so much you can always fix minor problems. But I will give way to the experts. I have ordered everything new that goes on the outside of the car, handles, badges, and etc. It ought to look great soon.
I too just am about ready for paint. I just have to sand the K36 for the last time (I hope) and like you I
am going to let someone else paint it. Good luck.
1LE, I am going to stay with Dark Red, it's the safest bet for the long run.
TR69, the last sanding when fast. I cross-hatched 220 and got everything real smooth. It's alot faster that the other times I sanded.
