Tomorrow i'm going to rebuild a steering box for the first time. I forgot to by the GM grease for it. Is there any replacement that you can use for this and functions as good ?
I was always told that a good grade of lithium based chassis grease was the grease of choice. However, that was 25 years ago just before Saginaw exited the manual steering gear business. Through the years there have been big improvements in greases, synthetics, etc. There just isn't any more recent engineering data from the former manufacturerer.
BTW, don't overfill the gear. There needs to be some air volume inside the gear to allow for grease expansion as the gear and other things get warm under the hood.

Jim, how do you feel about pumping grease into the steering box using a drilled out bolt and zerk fitting? It sounds like you could overfill the gear box using this method if you serviced it until the grease came out another bolt hole.
