Why is there so many here that give the L-48 such a bad rap? It's a great little engine. I have owened several L-48's and L-82's and have had some L-48's that would out run some L-82's. There are good and bad in both engines and some are going to be quick and some are going to be dogs. That just a fact of life. (meaning if you had 20 L-48's or 20 L-82 and you raced them all togeather no two will run exactly alike)
So give the guy's with those L-48's a break. Just cause you may have an L-82 does not mean it's going to be quick and you going to out run every L-48 you run up aganst.
Great forum here guy's! :smash:
PS This is not ment as a flame!!!!!
I have an L48. And I give it a bad rap, rap, rap every once-in-awhile ;)
Are you talking stock L48 to stock L82 comparisons? I can see MAYBE a fresh L48 beating a real tired, out of tune L82, but an apples to apples comparison would result in the L82 beating the L48 in a drag race everytime.
The way I see it on the forum is that the L82 is held to a higher level of respect than the L48. Not the L48 being put down. A lot of the SBC that I've owned were much lesser than the L48. The L48 platform, although not as good as the L82, is a great engine to do some basic street hotrodding. Once you get into some serious hotrodding, the limitations of the L48 quickly become apparent. The L82 can probably take a little more serious roddin, but will soon reach its limits too.
Hope ya feel better now....LOL! I've found that part of the fun of these things (I have an L-48 too) is how little it takes to warm one of them up. With just what I did in my sig. the thing hauls compared to stock...getting rid of stock exhaust system alone was a very big gain...And lets not forget L-48ers, you're still drivin' a 'Vette. LOTS of people would like to have that problem... :jester :jester :seeya :flag
Whoa....... now wait a minute. There is NO WAY that a L-48 could beat a L-82.
Just NO WAY!!!!!! ( :jester Just Kidding)
I think ( my own opinion) that the L-82 is giving "more respect" because it was the option engine and because of the fewer numbers made. For insyance, in the 75 model year, only 2,372 vettes out of 38,465 were made with the L-82 engine, making more rare, therefore more desireable.
Like tnt76vette said, they are all Vette's, and that's what's important.
First of all, I don't think the L48 gets a "bad" rap. It is just the less desirable of the two. The L82 has a forged steel crank with 4 bolt mains. Forged pistons, and screw in studs. These make the L82 a sturdier engine which can stand up to more modding and beating. And yes, you get a few extra ponies to go along with that. But I think the L82's appeal is it's beefier bottom end and the fact that it was considered a "performance" option.
I don't have either...but the 327's used the same block for different hp ratings with pistons/cam/heads being the main differentiators. Agree L82 is desired more for the fact it was the performance engine from the factory. This forum proves that the L48 can be turned into a real stormer fairly easily.
