Help...I have a solid lifter cammed 350 with open plenum manifold that pulls about 6" of vacuum at idle out of gear around 1100 rpm. I am trying to street tune it a little with timing and a carb change. I dont race but love that sound.
I was wanting to run a Edel 1406, but when I installed it it drips fuel from the primary boosters, wont idle and doesnt run for more than a few seconds before flooding out. Fuel pressure is 5lbs. and float level is good. Im running 20* initial timing and 18* mech advance. Plus full manifold vacuum advance...it starts fine and runs ok with the Holley 4150 just trying something different.
Ive drilled 3/32 holes in the primaries...no help. I'm thinking, even with the BLUE edl springs (5") my metering rods may be 'UP'....any other ideas....thanks
It sounds like the floats are getting stuck.
If it is new out of the box the metering rods and jets should be fine even with the 400 hp your engine is pushing. You would think if anything you'd want bigger jets and metering rods with 400 hp.
If it is a used unit then perhaps you'll need a float kit and verify what rods and jets are in there.

Just off hand, what jets and rods would you recommend for a 350-400 HP 350 using a 1406?
..by me at that...I bought the book, carefully measured, and cleaned and used care. It was straightforward, much easier than a Quadrajet, IMO.
Oh and this carb is a SA9637 Carter that I jetted like a 1406 1 stage rich on power with 1428 jets (.100) 1450 metering rods(070x.042) and .095 secondary jets....I have a 4175 Holley I'm gonna try next...don't know why I wanted this old Carter so bad anyway, must be a hobby or something!!!????

Reason: more info....
Send it to Lars and for around $200 he will take excellent care of your carb. I have a 1406 Edel on my L46 and it runs perfect. I sent it to him for a rebuild just to be on the safe side since I did not know much about my carbs rebuild history but all was good except for some simple jetting changes. He will turn it around within a week of recieving and his communication skills are excellent.
[QUOTE=paul67;1562882175]OK, I'll try this one. The #1406 is a square-bore carb. Did you install it on a spread-bore intake?
negative...Holley street dominator open plenum...its like A Torker IIr. It is also a Carter 9637 which is an older Edelbrock from B4 when Carter made them. I jetted/roded it like a 1406 and modified the linkage a little as it had the Ford kickdown. There has to be only a few thing that would specifically cause my problem, I think. Ck'd fuel pressure, float level/function. I did put the lightweight step up springs in as well but with only 6" of idle vacuum I think the rods are in the up position. Wouldnt that let fuel drip from the booster venturies? Especially at low vacuum. Maybe its warped a little but I dont think so. Its raining and 33*F here so itll be next weekend before I play around with it anymore. Gonna try that 4175 Holley on a 180* manifold.
