In addition to the procedure outlined below, there is somewhat of a trick to installing the spring. It's been a while since I did it, but in addition to your bent screwdriver, your most important tool is the door itself. Instead of trying to do all of the "spring twisting" with the tool, let the door do the work. Changing the open/close position of the door while forcing the spring makes the job last a total of about 5 minutes. Set it up as shown in the sketch when you start to twist the spring, slowly open (or close) the door a few degrees. One direction will work in your favor and the other against you. I think it will make better sense when you try it and see what I'm talking about.
