Trying to install the temp contol cable on my 77 (all the center dash parts were missing when i got my car). how should cable be routed? cable wants to stick straight out towards passenger side door, it appears to be in a major bind when i try point it forward! also appears to be way too long!! also the little barrel on the end of the cable does not want to stay in the lever! W-T-F !!!!! any help or pics would greatly appreciated.

Chris,

The cable does a pretty tight turn towards the front then over the transmission tunnel to the driver's side then u-turn again behind the duct and over the top of the heater box to the actuator behind the glove box. It's like a big S curve. The adjuster should end up sitting on the tunnel below the radio.

Hope that helps....

Joe

PS: Email me for diagrams...

and it puts a real bind on the AC heater control to the point a lot of controls pull away from the console leaving a gap.If you position the cable to where you can wire tie it to another component or brace you can keep the face of the control flat in the console.I have seen blocks of wood under the AC control panel also.

There should be 3 screws securing the heater control to the consol top assembly, so unless they are stripped out or missing the heater control slider bar assembly is secured very well. The end of the heater control cable installs straight into the slider bar arm then rotates approximately 90* towards the passengers door. There is a clip on the cable that slides into a socket built into the lower right side of the heater control assembly. Pictures in the assembly manual shows the cable traveling the mentioned way above. When doing a little cleaning a few years ago I found that my cable does not make the “S” bend at all, but follows the transmission tunnel towards the firewall then travels above to the arm that makes contact with the vacuum hot water shut off switch. My cable adjuster was located on the passenger side of the transmission tunnel once I removed the right side shift consol side trim panel it was right there.
Hope this helps,
Brian

Except on the issue of the control pulling away from the console. The very stiff cable really pulls on the slider assembly and actually warps the plastic over time-maybe aided by heat in the car during the summer.Brian is your car kept out of the sun and maybe spared of high interior temps?
Also after rereading Jyounane's post I think he might be referring to the older style control with the roll wheels.
edit-Plus his profile shows he owns a 69 and its right hand drive.

DWncchs,

I agree that it is a very stiff setup and difficult to assemble while being concerned to break something. I assemble the control end first then the heater-box end.

My recent experience and comments refer to a left-hand-drive 78 I'm restoring, which I believe will be the same as the 77 in question.

I do also have a 69 RHD I'm planning to convert back one day, I should have been more specific in my post!

Joe

To adjust, simply rotate the barrel of the adjuster to shorten or lengthen the cable. Adjust it so that the arm on the heater box depresses the vacuum switch about 1/4" when in the full cold position. That will activate the heater shutoff valve in the heater hose going to the heater. (At least that's how it's set up on a a/c car...I'm not sure if your 77 is a/c)
