Default [WATER PUMP] Coupla quick (stupid) questions

Hi All,

I ordered a new Stewart water pump for my '74, and I'm now wondering if the gaskets will come with the pump. And what about the studs for the fan? And the fitting for the heater hose, and the plug that goes on the top? My guess is that it comes with the gaskets only, but I'm not sure. Just wanted to gather all the parts before I get started.... :)

Thanks in advance!

-Pedro

It will only come with the gaskets.

Most pumps come with the gaskets, but not the plug, hose fitting or studs. You'll need to swap those out from your old pump.

Thanks guys! I don't think I'll be able to remove those studs, so I better order them now. May as well order a new fitting and plug too...

Thanks again!

Pedro - you can remove the studs by putting two nuts on them, and then turning just the innermost nut with your wrench. It will tighten up against the outer nut, and the stud will come right out. You can reinstall in the same fashion.

Bill,

Thanks for the tip! Learning new things everyday... :)

I'll give it a try! After all, it doesn't really matter if I place an order today, tomorrow, or on Friday for that matter....

Thanks again!

Pedro, don't forget you'll need to paint the pump too! While your at it, you may as well paint the pulley and change the thermostat.

Thanks Len! I've already ordered some cans of VHT paint (can't find it locally..), and the pulley and and fan are already being prepared to be painted. I'll also paint the front of the engine. I won't bother replacing the thermostat, though, since it's brand new.

Thanks again, and happy turkey day!

Take the various fittings off the old water pump , :smash: before you take the old pump off :) at least it was easyer for me ......to do it that way, as you only have so many hands & the block holds the pump rigid ......... :chevy :flag :chevy

Good luck with your Stewart water pump. The Stewart Stage II pump I put on my '74 blew out the gasket three times. I installed a Edelbrock Victor and haven't had any problems.

Pedro - you can remove the studs by putting two nuts on them, and then turning just the innermost nut with your wrench. It will tighten up against the outer nut, and the stud will come right out. You can reinstall in the same fashion.
Also use a wrench to hold the outermost nut and tighten the 2 nuts up against each other securely before trying to remove the stud. If the stud is very tight then both nuts will just turn on it, unless locked together tightly. In some cases this can damage the thread on the stud (but only when you really, really don't want it to!). If the nuts still insist on both turning, then hold the pump securely, keep trying to undo the innermost nut & use your 3rd hand to tighten the outermost nut at the same time (but with a little less torque than you're using to undo the inner nut. Hope this makes sense!

StrayDog and Paul: thanks a lot for the tips! I haven't pulled the studs yet, or the pump for that matter, and it'll have to wait till Monday, since tomorrow I'm going to NY.

Steve: unfortunately I'm on a tight budget--otherwise I'd love to get the ultimate pump for my car. Seems that many forum members had good luck with the Stewart pumps, and the price is right....

Speaking of water pumps...has anyone tried an electric pump?

This summer when my A/C belt broke (one week old Kelly Springfield rubber band junk!) it took out the two other belts. Not too far from my house so I turned around and headed back home. When I hit the gas for a normal take off I left a trail of rubber. The car had power like it's never had before.
That pump and fan must take up gobs of HP.

Summit has quite a few different electric water pumps. Just wondering how reliable they are?
