Getting ready to replace the rear main seal and install a one piece oil pan gasket. Looking at the pan it looks like I might be able to get the pan out without having to lower the front suspension. Is that the case or am I going to have to drop it?
Unbolt the idler arm from the chassis and the whole lot will come down, its a lot easier to do the pan that way. In fact I don't know if the pan will come out with the steering gear in place.

I just replaced my pan four piece gasket with a FelPro one piece and you will be happy with the result. As already stated, drop your steering linkage from the idler arm, one bolt, and their will be enough room to remove the pan. My main seal turned out to be OK, so I can't offer any help there.
I never replaced a main seal with the crank in place. Just for the fun I tried to get the main seal out of a spare engine in storage, and it just crumpled when I tapped on it with a rectangular brass rod. Give us a report on how it goes. I'd like to know for future reference. A parts counter guy told me you sometimes need to take them out in pieces. Best of luck with the replacement!
No it won't come out without unbolting the idler arm. I just did mine but I let the guy at the parts store talk me into the 2 piece cork and 2 seals felpro and it leaks so before long I'm going to put on a one piece like mentioned here and i planned to
I've replaced my pan gasket without unbolting the idler arm because I did not even think about doing that at the time. However, when I was putting it back together, I thought to myself, "Man, I should have just unbolted the idler arm and I would have had much more room to work with."
