This may help. I am running Sylvania Halogen on my 81, and there seems to be no issue. However, I did find the round situation to be quite interesting and not well thought out. To make a long story short, there is a large group of ground wires tapped and soldered about in the center of the harness running in front of the radiator. I ran a additional 10 gage ground from here to a spare threaded grounding spot on my very high output alternator. The lights get a bit brighter when this wire is connected. I suspect I may build a whole new harness for the lights some day, as the gage is bare minimum.
I have a 79. Hella makes a 60/55 hi /low & a 70 hi do you think i could use these without any harness upgrades
60/55 is the same wattage as the stock hi/lo bulbs. I think the inboard high beams were either 55 or 60 watts. To install H1 housings for the high beams, you'll have to cut the headlight door assembly a bit. I used a 2.5" bi-metal hole saw with a 1.75" wooden core stuck on the pilot bit to cut mine.
Even for stock lights, at least adding relays will be a huge improvement, both in lighting and safety (significantly less risk of your headlight switch catching on fire).
