I'm in the process of installing a Hurst Competition Plus shifter in my '81 vette. Many years ago, I installed a number of Hurst shifters in my 327, 396 and 409 chevys. But looking at the underside of my vette, I think this will be a more difficult undertaking. Can anyone provide me some pointers and dos and don'ts? Also, as I looked through the installation kit that I also purchased, I notice that the diagram shows a spacer being installed between the shift lever and the shift mechanism. There is a threated retainer/stiffener that is also provided and the shift lever actually fits the shift mechanism better without the spacer. Does the installation really require that the spacer be installed between the lever and the shift mechanism?

I don't know if 81's still have the parking brake handle in between the seats but on my '72 I found that the bracket for my parking brake cable pully interfered with the shift rod for second gear so I ended up taking it (the rod, not the whole shifter) back out to remove about 1/4 - 1/2 inch of the rod.

Ditto with my '70- I wound up cutting about 1 1/2" off the forward end of that bracket. It's pretty thick so cutting it didn't really weaken it appreciably. I installed mine just like the instructions said and it works beautifully.
