Default 2004R Installed

OK, I took your advice & went with a 2004R instead of the 700. You guys were right, it fit right in with no mods. Now my problem is the exhaust. I have headman headers on a 396 & 2 1/2" exaust. I see no way the get from the collectors to the holes in the crossmember. The trany is in the way. Now what can I do besides going back to the 4 spd. Some of you said you put a 2004R in a C3. How did you do the exhaust ?

Cool looking piece. Then you would not have to worry about crossmember at all.

OK, now you can go the expensive route, or if you can get it welded up, i'ts damn near free.....

so to cut the bottom crescent of the holes outta there, back at an angle to leave plenty of room, now this leaves the top portion which is a welded up 1/4 inch thick (optimistic) and obviously not strong enough to support jack nuttin .....

so to take a piece of steel, I used 1/4 inch by ~1" to go down the center, then piece over it with two plates spanning to either side, this is welded/filled in with other pieces to the lower sections of the cross support....if you go go my site, you can find pix of that support, pretty sure anyway....if not PM me....I can send or referr....

so YES it is easy possible to mod a standard cross support to be stronger than dirt, and open up those loops to pass the exhaust pipes of any diameter you want....making the whole install mucho easier...

Default Crossmember

This is a 68 so the crossmember is welded in. I would have to do alot of cutting & grinding to go with the BowTie. I guess I need to see pics from Mr Vette to see what your talking about. I hate to cut up the crossmember but if thats my only option..... I'm kind of hoping I can find a muffler shop that can bend 2 1/2 pipe tight enough to miss the back of the tranny !

Look around and find a couple short sections of tubing and weld them in as pictured. It is off the Drag Vette website http://www.dragvette.com/

With this addition you can easily drop the exhaust for work, and it should align with the collectors with a straight shot for the exhaust. If you can do the welding, it is a $20 mod. You could cut and fit the tubing, then U-bolt a length of rectangular tubing across the member bottom for support while driving to a welding shop. Another option is to remove your welded crossmember and make the Bowtie member a bolt in. You will need to remove the bottom of the welded member, but keep and modify the top piece to work. I have been looking at doing this to my 69.
