Default 76 Vacuum Filter

Hello..Ordered a new vacuum filter..goes before check valve...Car did not have one on before..Just the 3 port check valve...The filter is plastic/ white with one port on each end...I read in a vacuum paper from here states" pay attention when taking old filter off to install new one"..There is no clue/markings on which direction filter goes...I blew into it and it seems the same pressure on both ends..Help!..Thanks,Pete

It can go in either way. The orientation only matters if you are re using your old filter.

Thanks for the info..Now on the other hand...The vacuum line that will run to this filter and presently the 3 port filter is connected to back of carb...I had a friend email me a pic of his '76 engine and it runs to a "valve" behind carb that screws into engine..I think this "filter" helps filter out sediment into engine....My confusion is that my "valve" behind carb runs to a metal line which I found out may go to shift assist on transmission....Thanks for anymore help.....Pete

Had mine off yesterday. It caused me a scare the day before.Headlight pods lifted real slow then one stuck up one went down on shut off.Wiper pod on 72 wouldnt open. NEARLY started a full troubleshoot of both vacuum sysems. Guess what! Had'nt cleaned that sucker out for 2 years checking back on my records.AMAZING just how much fine black dust came out it was fully blocked up.Now everything back to normal again.
POINT IS ITS A EASY THING TO OVERLOOK KEEPING IT CLEAN.
Hope this saves you and other readers some time in the future SAM.

No just the opposite. When the engine is not running it keeps fuel vapors from seeping into the vacuum system.

I believe that would be the [other] job of the check valve and the filter serves as he has stated.

Hmmm I thought the filter protected the check valve and the vacuum hoses and etc.
edit-does make sense though if the check valve was good it couldnt get passed it-could be wrong-sorry
Edit again-Just learned something today. All the books say the filter does in fact keep particles from entering the engine. Not sure how I got it in my head the filter protected the vacuum system from fuel vapors.Sorry for the misinformation.:o

Yep, it can be a little fuzzy! The filter is there to primarily prevent any foreign objects from getting sucked into the intake. The check valve is SUPPOSED to
- make sure that only Vacuum exists on the "demand" side of it
......(like when you stand on it, vacuum would go away without it)
- stop the vacuum system from loosing vacuum after shutoff
......(yea, right maybe 2 seconds!)
- keep the fumes and potentially fuel from being sucked into the vacuum system.

Not sure where I came up with that mumbo jumbo.I seem to remember a person or a company saying you had to replace the filter when buying a new check valve to protect the check valve. For some reason I thought it was Paragon, they always had those little helpful hints printed all over their catalogs.Maybe its just the old age !!!!!
