Default oval vs square port

What is the power difference between using oval vs square port heads on a 71 454? Any other performance advantages?

I had both oval port and rectangle port on a 454, with the mild
factory hydraulic cam could tell no difference, but to take advantage
of the bigger runner head, it helps at 4000 on up in power.
If you have a set of oval ports put the 2.19/1.88 rectangle port valves in
it, that would make a nice combo. oval port head has a 2.07 intake
and around a 1.70 exhaust valve, both are punny for a 454 size
engine.

Oval port heads are really good for street use.
I wouldn't even think about rectangle heads for a street 454.
If you're not sure the Edlebrock "rovals" (also sold as GM)
are kind of a compromise. They have 290 cc ports - pretty
much halfway between normal ovals (average around 260ish)
and recs which are 300 cc and up. They're pretty cheap (if
you can call any aluminum BBC head cheap...).
GM sells an intake (basically an Edelbrock Performer RPM)
which is CNC ported to match those heads.

There are better heads for sure - I've read great things about
the Brodix Race Rites - but the Edelbocks are priced right.

I bought the GM version of those heads maybe six years ago
for about $1400 and the intake was pretty cheap too.
The heads were on sale at Sallee I think... Shop around!
