In order to take possession of my 78 Vette, I need to have a key made. The locksmith tells me that I need to remove the steering wheel to get at the ignition key mechanism. Would someone tell me how to get to the ignition lock? Thanks
I am working on my ignition lock cylinder now--it is not that easy. First I called a locksmith--told me to go to the chevy dealer. After I finally got it out and took it into another locksmith--no dice-said buy a new one. You have to use a wheel puller and then another tool to compress the middle part (lock plate retaining ring) to get to the turn signal switch--this is the easy part--be careful not to ruin the ignition key warning switch. You have to push down on the lock cylinder retainer to remove the ignition lock assembly--sounds easier than it is. I finally got mine out--but ruined it getting it out. Bought another set of cylinders--including doors and put it back in and the same problem occurred--won't go to the lock position. Now I am looking at the cable from the transmission that activates the locking mechanism.
