Hi!
I'm new to this forum but I'm hoping you folks can help me out. I need an answer to 2 things, first, the lower steering column cover on my 69 Vette is held on with 3 screw's the 2 bottom ones hold the cover and go through the mounting plate for the vacuum control switches the front screws into the collum via a screw retainer that is half moon shaped and fits into the 1/4in. slot under the column. Where can I find that screw retainer? & second, My car has a large vacuum reservoir under the drivers side fender with what looks like only 2 spouts I'm assuming 1 in & 1 out but none of the guides I have show it. It is not currently hooked up, Any one know how it fits into the system Thanks!
I can be reached @ bspaero@aol.com
You didn't state what year your vette is however the canister under the fender is most likely part of the emission controls. I would suggest you obtain the factory repair manual as it is an invaluable source for how
items like this should be hooked up.
Good luck
The canister under the driver fender is the vacuum can to operate the lights or wipers after the car is shut off. It should have onr hose fron the intake attached and one going from it to the head light relay. That said, it may have been taken off line because the will rust out and leak.
I don't know about the screw retainer, but a lot of vendors on this site have small stuff like that...Eckler's, Mid America, Zip, etc.
That large tank under the driver's fender is the vaccuum resevoir. On my '69 there is a large inlet hose coming to it from the vaccuum check valve. From there a smaller line goes out to a "T" then runs everywhere from there. This tank acts as a constant vaccuum source for your vaccuum system.
That retainer you need is a small white plastic square block (at least on my '69) with a tapped hole. The 3rd screw, shorter than the other 2, screws directly into this block thing. Hope that helps.
The half moon plastic blocks are called 'bathtub nuts'. They were used in several GM applications during the 70's. They are used to hold the side panels on the console on my '77. I picked up several packages at the equivalent of your Autozone. If you can't find them drop me your address and I will mail you one.
I was really surprised @ the responses from this forum, and yes I would reallly appreciate you sending one , I'll include my address @ the end of this. I kind of cobbled one together from another retainer I had from a Ford trim piece but the right one would make me feel better. Thank You so much.

Hi!
I have purchased the vacuum trouble guide and just recently the assembly guide, although the Vac. guide looks like it was drawn by a 5th grader, it does not show the locations of any of the parts. The car bye the way is a1969 and the cannister is kind of oblong and about 8 or 10 in. in Dia. so I'm kind of leaning toward the Vac. storage explanition. Thanks for your reply ,
I think everyone hate's them as much as you; I know I do. but the cannister I'm refering to is much larger than like an emmission coffee can or the Vac. wiper accuator , it's more likly a storage can of some sort. about 8-10 in Dia. and box or oblong shaped. I just ordered an assy. man. so perhaps that will show what it does. Thanks for the comment.
