68 radio hook up ?

68 radio hook up ?
Hi
I own a 68 BB convertible.
I bought a green faced original radio, don't know what year.
Service model No 01VFM2
serial No 1002581
It has chrome ***** with black plastic centers.
My car has a aftermarked radio installed and I want to put this original one back in.
How do I connect it up ?
It has a 9 pin connector on the back , what's that for ?
It also has a 3 pin connector with cables coming from the back. I know that's for the amplifier. Jellow , green & blue cable.
Out of the same area come green & green/black cables to a 2 pin connector. What's this one for.
On the left hand side looking at the face of the radio is a 3 pin connector with a torn sticker saying 12V & GRD. I suspect the arrow pointing from the 12V marking pointing to the outboard pin being the +, the center pin being the - and the arrow from the GRD pointing to the other outbd pin being an other GRD ?
The antenna connector is on the left side of the radio at a 45 deg angle.
Any ideas ?

The three-blade connector at the side of the radio is for +12V - Ground - Dial Illumination, from front to rear of radio. In my 70, the corresponding wire colors are yellow - black - green.
The other connectors are different on my radio.
I have found some wiring info at http://www.corvetteradios.com/page5.html.

the 1968 Vette had a year only radio - quite hard to find! Had special 1968 ***** which differ from 1969 and on.
I will see if I have a picture on hand, otherwise I will take a shot tomorrow.
My car was equipped with the U79 Stereo option radio.
On the electrics - sorry cant help you with this - only know that black is for ground, red for live and yellow for light.
Probably you check out the Hanes Manual?
Will try to look it up in the garage tomorrow!

I looked up the books and found out that the wire harness from 68 - 70 will have three wires for the radio.
They are:
Black - should be ground
Grey - should be live
Yellow - should be lighting.
I also found a wiring scheme in the Haynes manual on 1972 radios.
They differ depending on the option U-69 mono or U-79 stereo.
In every case there is a Heat sink, but in stereo version there is a replug wire to the radio again.
Sorry, cant post a scan, just got a new PC an Windows XP and my Scanner dont like each other by now!

So, what is this round 9 pin plug for on the back side ?
I also found out that the green faced radio distance between the ***** is
about 1/2 " longer than the one on the 74 radio, I bought previously, so with other words, the 74 radio will not fit my 68 and I will try to sell it again.
My original heat sink, I found in the dash of my car must be a mono, as it only has one 3 pin plug, no return to the radio.
But the green faced radio, I have now has this 9 pin plug, could this be the stereo return ?
How do I have to hook this up now ?
I guess that one way to find out is just to try it out.
By the way, the ***** of this radio are chrome with black plastic center.
They look as old as the push buttons.
What year radio would this be ? We only have 3 guesses.

All these old GM radios had a paper tag with numbers on them. If the radio you have still has this tag...post the numbers, i may be able to help more.

So, found out that the green faced radio, I bought , is a stereo DELCO
U-79 option. Bad thing is that I'm missing the multiplexer/amp for it.
So the 9 pin plug is the return of the multiplexer/amp.
Will see if I can locate such a unit or do a other mod to get it working.
Still don't know exact original year of it, regarding the chrome ***** with the black plastic centers.

This multiplexer/ Amp is referred to as Heat Sink in the manuals.
You will definitely need them to get ´things running.
Sorry, still no communication between Scanner and PC - otherwise I would have posted the drawing on this!

If your doing this to also listen to the radio I would skip the electrical hook-up. Your not going to be able to hear much going down the road. If it's a retro thing you want to have working, thats something else.

Yes, your right.
With this side exhaust, no radio can be heard during cruise at all.
I'm doing it more for the retro, but still like to have it operational, if possible.
No music can beat the big block solid lifter sound out of side pipes. :lol:

So, seems to be a 70 radio.
Seems to be difficult to find correct amp/multiplexer.
I will try to find or build something to get it to work, if I can't locate them.
How should the ***** be coloured for an early 68 ?
Should the center be painted silver ?
