Have any of you tried the replacement door handle springs? Are the little replacement hinges worth the ten bucks? Do these work, and how hard is the installation? Thanks for your help
Yes they do work, I bought two from ecklers and they were rubbish I then bought two from zip and they were great. I was replacing one that had been on the car for about ten years and had finally split. They install in about 30 seconds!
Imo, those type of flat plate springs are band aids - they don't fix the problem. The underlying issue is that the coil spring that is on the handle shaft has failed. I would find a donor handle, with a good spring, and then take your old handle out, remove the shaft and replace the spring. It is a lengthy process but you are doing it right. I have seen lots of handles that have been removed from cars that have good hardware, including the spring, but lousy chrome. That is where I got my donorspring.
you can also go to the hardware store and get a spring that is the same size (or largest size that will fit), only meant to be an extension spring. then cut to length and straighten out the ends to match the original. this has worked for one of my door handles for at least the last 15 years
I have tried to use the stainless steel v-strip spring....save your time... money... and efforts....I do not even consider them a band-aid fix...they appear to be much bigger in print....
Maybe I should add a little.I only would put this on a door handle that its ONLY problem is not popping back up the last little bit -about a 1/4 inch.In other words the flapper is just barely hanging down but otherwise the handle works good. This is no fix for a worn out handle or main spring. Some really nice handles just cant get it up that last little bit.......is this an apropriate time for a Viagra comment?
i never tried the bent plate type spring so i really don't know, but i'd imagine many who have used it with success probably had the symptoms as you described.
i would have tried the bent plate at the time i needed a fix, but just took the other path trying to get it fixed quicker. it just happened to work too.
