Default Power steering pump pully part 2: Installation

Several weeks ago I posted about the pressed on power steering pump pully I was trying to remove. In short; I bought the tool, removed the pully, fixed the bracket and now I need to put the pully back on, so...whats the best way to get the pressed on power steering pump pully back on? Even though I have been accused of being "Bubba" I dont subscribe to the school of 'Use a bigger hammer' so Please give me some good advice here.

Thanks,
Don

Just as there is a specific puller to pull the pulley off, there is a specific tool to press it back on. It's very similar to a balancer installed and any local parts store will be able to sell you one or rent it to you.

If you bought the proper or correct tool for removing the pulley, it also installs the pulley by simply reversing the operation. Snap On or Mac Tools

Iknow, I know its an autozone special, but it did the job, well half the job. I dont see how I can use this to get the thing back on though. I think they loan tools maybe I can borrow theirs if this wont work..

Wrong tool to put it on. Therefore not all is lost,

The pump shaft should be threaded, Get a bolt the same thread probably 3/8 SAE. Then with a nut on the bolt thread the bolt into the pump shaft to the bottom, then screw the nut down to the pulley and just keep turning until it bottoms out. Then back the nut off and then unscrew the bolt. Ok!

I know what you are saying, I did notice that the hollow inside of the shaft was hexagonal but I didnt see threads in there are they down past the hex part? I have put a 3/8 allen wrench in there because I thought it was a nut (before I was informed the thing was pressed) I will run down to the garage and see f I have a bolt that will run down inside.

Bingo! now the bad news, I dont have a 3/8 threaded bolt long enough to do the above mentioned procedure. Good news, I live about 3 minutes from a hardware store that does! I'll go in the morning, Thanks everyone for the help!

The shaft has a 3/8-16 UNC thread. Grease up a couple washers so the head of the bolt can easily rotate while it presses the pulley down onto the shaft.

FYI, the splines on the inside of the pump shaft are for the Saginaw manufacturing plant to spin the pump shaft and test the pump.

I picked up the installer/puller kit at Harbor Freight for under $20. Works fine.

I've had my pulley on and off a few times while installing my serpentine setup. The kit makes life much easier.
