Default X Pipes..

It seems to me that some people install X pipes anywhere on their car. By doing so, are you gaining any performance increase at all? The reason for the post is because I know that you cant just stick an H pipe anywhere and expect results. What is the difference with an X pipe? What are its advantages over an H pipe?

One sure advantage of an H-pipe is it's simple to make, especially if you are connecting 2 existing pipes that didn't include X-pipe spaces in the beginning.

There is a good high level blurb about X- and H-pipes here:

Here's the H-pipe I made:

I had a little typo... I meant to say what is the advantage over the H pipe. Anyway I read the article and it sounds pretty informative, but it doesn't mention about placement. With an H pipe, I have learned to take a can of white spray paint and to spray your exhaust right after the headers (about where your tranny sits). Then you start you car up and let it run for awhile. After that, you check where the paint is burnt the most on both sides and you place you H pipe there. Does it not matter with an X pipe?

For maximum performance, the X-pipe should go in the same location as an H pipe. I installed mine under the rear end, because I was more concerned with eliminating an annoying resonance than gaining a few Hp so the location wasn't critical to me. I just installed it where I found it the most convenient.
