Default Transmission Heat shield

Has anyone installed a new heat shield over the tranny on a 73 with a 400 automatic? How hard would this be to do with just a pair of jack-stands, and is lowering the tranny requiered

Default heat shield

I don't know if your 73 is the same as my 70, but the only heat shield I know of is the piece of foam that is an interference fit between the housing of the turbo 400 and body, plus adhesive securing it to the transmission. My original must of blew out, or fell off. Anyway I have another piece to replace it, actually longer from side to side. I have tried to install it by pushing it up, not a lot of room to work and side lined it for something to do later. When I do get the urge to install it I am going to remove the crossmember bolts and lower the transmission to install it. I will just use a section of 2X10 wood on my jack to lift/lower the transmission under the turbo 400's pan. My pan is one I replaced about 22 years ago. I got it from GM as an replacement and it is so much stronger/thicker guage metal than the original. Seals better as well. My replacement foam piece is so much thicker than the original that it will compress and should stay without any adhesive.

The tunnel heat shiels is a molded 1 piece that might be able to can be installed with the tran in, but you need to cut it in several places and then it may not stay together. It is held with clips to the bottom of the fibreglass tunnel for the trans. The other post is the foam collar that goes on top of the trans at the backside of the block.
