81, I am going to modify my stock crossmember for the different length of the 700r4 as compared to the 350. My question is concerning the heigth. Should the flat metal plate with the two holes for the rear mount be higher, lower, or the same as the original to keep the driveshaft correct, or should I just install the trans and build this plate to fit?
Adjust to fit. There were many different tail shaft housings for the TH700R4, and without knowing exactly what you have it's hard to say how it'll all fit. It's just easier to take on that task as it comes.
Here is the bracket I made for my 350 to 700R4 conversion. The offset is the same for both brackets. Black is stock. The S/S bracket moves the mount holes to the rear 2".

Above is about exact the same bracket I used on my '72 here, which is for sale BTW....
it fits the 700 just fine, all welded up, sits on stock location, and drops the shaft about an inch, which is needed.....
What year is this crossmember? The 81 does not have the tubes for the exhaust. It also does not have the bolt on mounts as pictured. It does have the parking brake wheel as the crossmember shows. It has a weld on mount that I will cut/grind off, leaving the parking brake. I suppose I will then weld back on a new, modified mount. If I do make it bolt on, it will need long bolts to go all the way through the crossmember.
