Default Bumpers

I just bought a 1979 that needs the front and rear bumpers replaced. They are not really damaged, just wavey and the paint has cracked. I am not sure what type of bumper is best for replacements.

I heard that urathane will just crack and get wavey again. Fiberglass is supposed to eliminate those problems but is fragile if hit and harder to install because it does not flex. I read that Tru Flex is supposed to solve both problems.

Anyone out there have experience with Tru Flex? Is it better?

You are correct on your assumptions about Urethane and Fiberglass.

I have heard from some that the tru-flex are not as easily modified to get it to match up to the body. I have also heard that they actually mat crack and break easier than Fiberglass. This is just hear-say. I have no proof or experience with it.

I do have experience with fiberglass and I love it! It does need to be worked a little to fit right, but it looks great and you won't have to worry about it "waving" at you later down the road.

Good Luck

Can help with the tru-flex, but I also have fiberglass front and rear and love it.

Maybe I can help. I have one of each - fiberglass in front and Tru-Flex in back - and seamless at both ends. I attached both of them the same way with bonding compound between and stainless steel bolts through the body and bumper.

Of the two, the fiberglass (front) is holding up better IMO. I have a 2 inch hairline crack in the paint only at the seam in the back left side. I think the paint cracked in that one place because of the back bumper flexing slightly. That's the only problem I've had in 5 years. You probably won't have any problem with Tre-Flex if you don't go the seamless route.
