I'm building an LS3 427 for '81 4-speed - an aluminum 6.2L block honed to 4.07, 4.1" crank, L92 heads and an L76 intake. They're getting 600 fwhp out of 'em with cams in the 230 range. Plenty of power, the reliability and economy of fuel injection and a lightweight aluminum engine nestled between the frame rails.
Best of both worlds, IMHO - one of the best body styles and a modern, powerful engine.
I took the Vette out tonight and had a friend drive the Trans Am. I'm happy to say they were pretty much dead even up until we let off at 90. I'm happy with that since the TA ran low 12s at the track. Only problem with the vette is for some reason it likes to cut out at 70 sometimes, dunno why (maybe transmission messing up, I need to get it worked on).
Now if only the vette got the gas mileage of the TA i'd be haaaaappy
That is not true either - they are as fast, in fact for their time they were damn fast, but todays cars have been getting faster and faster. I remember when the new 280z came out and could do zero to sixty in 7.5 sec! That was fast for the day. Or when the 5.0 Mustand came out and could rocket to 60 in 6.6 sec. Now there are SUV's that can do that....
You are correct. For their time they were fast. My response was towards the people that seem to think the old cars, even the big blocks, were so much faster than cars now. I'm sure everyone here has met the person at the car show whose brother's best friend had some super awesome car just like whatever you're driving only it was a different year, different color, different model, and was oh so much better. This mythical car would tear the doors off modern cars and melt asphalt from a roll according to this guy. Those are the people I was referring to. You know it was a sad sad time in auto history when 16sec 1/4 mile times were considered fast. I'm so glad those days are gone.
defsegx, you may be running out of fuel in the float bowls if you still have a carb. I was having issues like that with a Qjet. Not sure your entire setup, but that could be a possibility.

L88plus, I like your thinking.
I think a lot of the people you are referring to simply haven't ridden in or driven a performance car for the last 15-20 years or so. For a very long time, the late 60's - early 70's cars WERE the fastest cars around. The new cars didn't really start catching back up in power until the late 80's Stangs, Vettes, Camaros, Trans Ams and imports. That's a LONG time in new car years. It would be like regressing in performance from this year until about 2027. I think that's why a lot of people have the impression of muscle cars being faster than new cars...because for 20 years it was true.

Near 600HP, 5 speed over drive tranny ( I get 25mpg on the highway) , ZR rated tires on my my poor little C3 nuff said I'll be having a sandwich in he pits by the time your camaro crosses the line
Seriously it doesn't take much engine work and your Vette will smoke the Camaro
My 72 LT-1 (not stock) runs faster than my wife's 02 Z06 Vette with the right gears and tires (OK the Z06 will beat it at the autocross races!) I like my 72 Vette, you don't see many on the road. I HATE the fact that GM styling forgot all about the windshield wipers on the 4th generation Camaro/Firebird until the day before they started production and quickly SLAPPED on a pair of windsheild wipers on that Fbody. The 4th generation Fbody would have been a great car if they had done all the styling details well (a classic like the 68-72 Vettes!)

if that were my car i would tell everyone it was a bone stock smogger and let them find out the hard way.
small secondary bowl and a fuel pump that's not keeping up. Start a post related directly to this. It may be something entirely different that some of the Qjet gurus on here could help you with. But that's my initial guess
Sounds like my kind of car Motor Head.
Just keep in mind that power is power no matter how you make it. Think your V8 is something bad that can't be touched? I know plenty of turbo Supras that will say otherwise. Think your V10 Viper is awesome? I know plenty of V8s that will laugh. Speed is a question of money. How fast do you want to go? There are so many cliche sayings it'll make your head spin, but they are all right. So while your car right now may not be faster than your other one or Joe Somebody's down the street, that doesn't mean it can't be made faster. Other than you guys with Cali C3s with the 305 under the hood, every C3 had a great engine to start with that holds lots of potential. You just have to decide how you want to go about extracting that potential.

wife calls the ss "el diablo". scared to put my foot into the c3. something is probably going to blow out the side. BTW- i've smoked new vettes in that car many a time as im the original owner. but anyway, back to the thread... i want to make the vette more>MORE! i tried to burn out the other day, no-go.
like to recant that last remark. after i posted, it i fired up the c3 and went down to the end of the street and smoked the tires through 3rd gear. now were geting somewhere. damn.
