Default Defroster duct question

I have the dash out of my car to replace all of the heater and A/C vacuum hoses, replace the headlight switch, and replace all the bulbs while I'm at it. While taking the duct work out I noticed that the bottom of the defroster duct has a open space between it and the main duct for the heating system. This doesn't look right to me, I think it should be connected and I think it explains why hardly any air blows out of the defroster vent. Does anyone have a picture of this so that I can see if anything is missing. You can see what I'm talking about in the photo below. Thanks.

I don't think your missing anythig. I believe that gap is just sealed. My '80 had a gap and I just sealed it with duct tap.

As far as I know, that gap was left open by the factory. Sealing it with tape won't hurt anything.

Yep, my '77 as well. I still have the remnants of the factory duct tape on mine...just wrap it with new duct tape and go have a beer.

My '76 was exactly the same. I used some plastic, screws and duct tape and fabricated something that would close that space up!

I know of no factory duct tape there. Are you sure?

Yes. The factory had a duct tape of sorts wrapped around the gap in the duct.
