Default aircon compressor - pics

aircon ran fine but then the compressor started making a rattle noise from the front. it only makes the noise when i turn on the aircon so im assuming the bearing inside the clutch has worn. is it easier just to buy a new compressor or is it better to have it rebuilt when this happens ?maybe is just something loose? i know absolutely nothing about them.... i put a pink arrow on the picture to show the area where the noise is coming from ..please tell me of your experience..

It's known as the R4, a radial compressor with 4 pistons, the things are normally noisey to a certain extent, but since i'ts obviously out of the car, I would replace it, and flush the entire system out, blast it good replace the valves the system should be ok....

I have seen good rebuilts on the R4s and had bad brand new ones from GM, so for the money get a quality rebuilt, now how you tell a GOOD rebuild from a lousey one going IN, is a good question....

there probably nothing YOU can do to fix it though....

Be sure to replace the dryer/accumulator.

thanks for your help blokes. turns out one of the terminals on the compressor was like a loose tooth. it was just flopping around and cutting the power on and off . luckily i noticed it just before i had the thing drained and rebuilt. hey just out of curiosity a few of my mates have never bothered with getting a new dryer/accumulator and even left it lying around before re-installing it and they,re air ran fine. me on the other hand did buy one and put it in so what can go wrong if you take a short cut and dont use a new one?

They have desicant inside to absorb moisture that is the killer to the system. They have a lifespan.

Your system will last longer with a new one.

If your's is an R-12 system, give serious consideration to changing/converting your system to R-134. R-12 is very costly and R-134 costs a fraction and keeps the environmentalists happy. Another trade off is R-134 doesn't cool as good as R-12, it just takes a bit longer to cool down.

Regarding the accumulator, you only need to change it when the system is opened. The disiccant absorbs moisture in the system but can become saturated when open in the atmosphere.

Not really. Have you priced any R134 lately? I'd stay R12 if at all possible.
