Default Steering Column Rebuilding

My steering column for my 1970 needs rebuilding. I’m sure that it will need a few of the standard parts for a tilt/tel column. Who would you suggest to do it? Need a quality job, not a show car, just a driver and cost is definitely a factor.

Why don't you just do it yourself, get a catalog from Dr. Rebuild and order some parts. Otherwise contact Corvette Steering Service, google them.

Jim Shea sections

All the information you could possibly need to do the job yourself. I completely stripped mine apart for sandblasting and powdercoating, fixed a few busted pieces, and it only took a few days.

Jim Shea has a lot of knowledge on the steering columns. He can be found on this forum. You can do it yourself and learn alot. Make sure to take plenty of pictures while disassembling. It will help to get it back together.

Do you have any particular complaints or problems with your T&T column? In many cases it is better to leave "well enough" alone.

One common problem with T&T columns is a general looseness of the upper column head. The fix is straight forward - just tighten four support screws. However, getting to the screws requires complete disassembly of the column head.

I would suggest that you download this paper:

http://jimshea.corvettefaq.com/wp-co...dr1-09oc07.doc

Pages 2 & 3 describe a couple simple tests that you can conduct with your column still in the car. Those tests may lead you to the areas that might require fixing.

The above paper is the first of three papers and three pics that can be downloaded from the www.corvettefaq.com websight. They are listed in the T&T section under Jim Shea's Steering Papers. The papers are quite wordy but they are also quite complete. The only two special tools that you will require is a steering wheel hub puller and a special lock plate compresser tool.

it set me back a few dollars, but it was nice to get a solid and tight column that feels like a new one. A + job
