I just got a new ignition shield for my '72 - 454. It did not have one when I bought the car and this one doesn't seem to fit right. The wiper motor connection is in the way. I pulled the wiper motor connector and it fit fine.
The connector goes straight in the front of the motor, but it seems as though, in order for the ignition shield to also fit, that the wiper motor connection would have to come in from the bottom ( straight up along side the firewall). The Assembly Manual provides no help.
So, does anyone have a 71- 72 and how does your wiper motor connection work? Pics would be great !!!
Sray454....
Here are a couple pictures of a '70, (Factory Original) with a 350 engine.
Late '70, '71, '72 used the same sheilding. I don't know if 454 is different.
Hope this is of some help.
Barry
Barry ... Thanks for the posts ... I think the shield tops are basically the same, and if my wiper motor connection looked like yours, my shield would fit. But my wiper motor connector comes straight out and get in the way of the shield.
As far as I can tell my top cover piece on my 73 454 is identical to Barry's and the wiper hook up looks the same as well. Maybe the wiper motor isn't correct for your year?, just a possibility.
mine also looks the same as Barry'S....you may need to change your electrical wiper motor connections back to something low profile(as original), it sounds like somewhere down the road it was changed to something else.
I'm pretty sure the big block wiper motor electrical connections are the same as a small block..... the wiper motors are the exact same.
The top shield on my 72 BB looks the same as Barry's. My wiper moter does have the connections on the front that point directly at the shield. The two wires going to the connector are not in a moulded plug, they each have their own spade connector on them and they are then plugged into the wiper motor. They are 90deg spades and take up very little room and fit easily. I don't know if thats stock or not but it doesnt look like it was ever redone.
hope this helps.
