Please help me figure out this problem. When I turn on the light, the middle two lights with the white lenses that is supposed to serve as back up or reverse light also stays on. Is this normal?
Also, I have a spare socket for a 1156 bulb on each side, and I am not sure what to do with them. Thank you in advance.
Backup lights shouldn't be on. You might have wires mixed. Could be any of a number of things. My advice is this; Get yourself a wiring schematic. I bought mine for $12 on e-bay. You may find you'll need it on other occasions. The diagram is black and white, so when I follow a circuit I color it as I go. I'm not an electrical genius, but using this method I've figured out some pretty complex wiring problems.
Sounds like you might have your tailight bulbs and sockets plugged into your backup light lenses. The other two are probably the back up light sockets. Depends on whether you're describing correctly that turning on the lights turns on the back up lights. Backup lights should only come on with the ignition switch on and the car in reverse. Tailights will come on anytime you pull the switch, even with the ignition switch off.

I am trying to figure out how you could have a spare 1156 socket. You mean just hanging there, or in the TL housing. Sounds like maybe someone had 6 TLs at one time and you have the 1157s mounted in your BU light socket instead of the 1156.
How long have you had this car? I have the same set-up with a spare socket on the side also ( back-up light socket ) . Only because I converted my tail lights from two brake light to 4 brake lights with the Ecklers Bubble light kit. That leaves the back-up light socket off to the side because it is no longer used ,you install another 1157 bulb socket from the kit It sees that someone that had the car before you converted it back to 2 brake light ( old lens's ) took out the bubble lens's and never replaced the back-up light socket to their proper location. Also it may be that ( if you have a 4 speed ) your back-up light switch on the trans in not adjusted correctly and it stays on all of the time. But I think it is the 1st problem that I mentioned because you state that you have a spare bulb socket. Good luck

Can't thank you all enough for your input on this problem. The year of the car is a '75, with auto transmission. I just purchased this car in the last month and I think the previous owner had the same set up as Dario's reply. I now know that I can eliminate the extra 1157 socket. Fred
