One of my books says its ok to jack up the rear by putting the jack on the spring mounting plate. I had been doing it this way but now I am putting a new glass spring on. Before I f something else up with my ignorance, I had heard somewhere else not to jack on the spring. What do you guys do?
I know I can jack the frame one side at a time, but I normally put the whole car up on 4 jackstands and I use two jacks, one on the front crossmember (I made a plate, crossmember already been dented) and the other on the spring mounting plate. Are you guys doing this?
Jack the car up by the center spring mounting plate, then put your jack stands under the rear trailing arm.
When you lower the jack, the rear suspension will be on the stands and you will be able to remove the spring.
The hardest part is putting the spring back in. When you bolt it up in the center, you will need to jack the end of the spring up so that you can install the rear spring end mounting bolts. This is not a problem, just be careful not to tip the car off the jack stands.
You can also put your jack stand right under the triangle plate in front of where the trailing arm bolts to the frame and then put your other two under the front end of the car where ever you choose. Either will work and you should not have any problems installing the new spring.
It’s always a smart idea to keep either the jack in a slightly lower position, or another (third) jack stand under the car around the rear end pumpkin while doing the work. It’s a simple trick that could save your life should something go wrong. Yes I know we all say it won’t happen, but we did loose a customer this year from being squashed by his car!
As long as you put it right in the center! People use the stut rods all the time and you should see the pile of old bent strut rods we have in the shop.
If you use the strut rod not only do you bend it, but you also change the caster on the rear wheels.
pretty much most of the time I try and leave the jack under there just in case...! but since I have the spring out now and am working on the diff, I just hope the jackstands hold up!
so its ok to jack it in the rear on the spring mounting plate in order to lift both rear tires at the same time?

Even if you are working on the rear end, do me a favor and stick the jack in front of the rear end or somewhere "just in case". Put it on one frame rail or somethng.
If it were to fall, it would still keep the car from coming all the way down.
