The C2 Corvettes were called Sting Ray, as an actual name. The '68 did not have this badge, and starting in '69 again, they added the badge, Stingray. Now, even though the '68 didn't have a badge, and the '76 was the last C3 with a Sting Ray badge, all C2 Corvettes are Stingrays and all C3s are basically Sting Rays. It's not a model, or package, or anything that denotes value. It's just a name GM put on them.
I hate to even bring this up but I thought as well that the 68 wasnt a stingray then someone posted pics of GM sales brocures showing the 68 as a stingray. Just didnt put it on the car???. I fought it til I saw the pics. I have a 68 too...
GM had a concept car in 1961 called the Mako Shark.... It was a precurser to the production C2 models (1963~1967)
But the C2's were called Sting Ray ( two words) when they went into production.
Another concept car was shown in 1965: Called the Mako Shark II
C3 (1968~1982) model Corvettes are also known as "Sharks" as they closely resemble this second series concept.
The side vents on the 68 and 69 model vettes certainly looked like shark gills.
