Default 69 Wiper System

I just finished installing a new vacuum tank, wiper assembly and new hoses. My problem is that the only way I can get the system to work is to manually use the wiper overide vacuum switch (under the steering post) to open the wiper door then use the wiper switch to operate the wipers. I'm under the assumption that the opening of the wiper switch should automatically open the wiper door without having to manually open it. Can anyone please tell me what I did wrong and how to correct it. I think I followed the diagrams. Thanks for the help.

You are correct that you should be able to turn on your wipers, the wiper door should lift, then your wipers will start. Did it work right before?

Exactly which hoses did you replace? Not knowing which hoses you replaced, my first guess would be to re-check all your routing. There are two places where 3 vaccuum lines run together through the firewall. It is easy to get these confused. I have done it.

Did you diagram your system before you started taking it apart? There are a couple of places you can get vaccuum line diagrams online. I made up my own before I tore into it. No guarantee if it is correct, but it was what I had before I started, and it worked fine on my '69.

Thanks for the response. To answer your question there was no vacuum tank and vacuum hoses in the car when I bought the car. I followed the diagram in Paragon Parts book. I guess I will have to check all the hoses again if it should just be a switched line. I thought maybe one of the relays were defective. Thanks again.

Maybe you have the 2 hoses on the wiper over ride valve reversed.

The easiest test is to switch these.

Checking the vacuum hoses would be my first step.

There is also a solenoid behind the dash (right of tach) that controls vacuum to the wiper door. Turning on the wiper switch, activates the solenoid which controls vacuum to the wiper door.

Make sure you connected the wire(s) to the solenoid while you're checking the hoses. With the engine off, you should be able to hear the solenoid kicking in/out when you turn the wipers on/off. (you may disconnect the wiper motor so you don't hear it by mistake).
