Default 76 door mirror mount

Hello again...Having a heck of a time trying to mount my new drivers side mirror..Had this car 4 months...Old mirrors loose...did drivers side first..mounting screws RUSTED through...could not break/drill them loose..had to drill out rivets holding well nuts assembly inside door..(it was not working well anyway)..optained some rubber expansion nuts from Lowes (well nut design)..I am hoping this will hold mirror..will have to drill out mirror mount plate assembly to make holes a little bigger to accept new screws..also..screw can only be so long (1 1/4") before it hits against inside of door..HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD THIS PROBLEM ?....Just need a best way to re-mount new mirror...Thanks as always.....Pete

The best way I have found is to use fiberglass or marine epoxy to fill in the old holes (can be found at most hardware stores). Then after a few days of curing, drill a small pilot hole to start your screws. Use a corse thread screw that will recess in the mounting tab hole, make sure its a flat top screw that mounts flush or below (below is better) the top of the mounting tab. Secure the tab snugly with the gasket underneath and you should be good to mount the mirror.

I forgot to mention, when your filling in the old holes with the epoxy, let the epoxy sit for a while to gel up. It makes it easier to fill the hole without it pouring out the back. Be patient and it'll turn out great. Good Luck

Epoxy. I had the exact problem. The old screw holes into the fiber glass were worthless, and making new holes would STILL involve filling the olds ones. So, go to autozone, and buy a filler. Then, once that filler has dried, retap those same holes, and VOILA!!!. However, I also used some quick weld, just to be safe, lol. Didn't want to do that again until I have to paint the sucker. 20 years from now, when I can afford it, lol.

Thanks .....I have done some fiberglassing on my old boat using resin..I may have a can of the epoxy somewhere...I was really dissapointed of the original mount design to begin with...I guess GM did not think of rust issues..Course if my car was garaged in the first place I would not have had this problem.. ...BUT ..it is now...Garage to small for the boat but the vette is happy.. ....Thanks again,Pete
