Hello. When I rev my L-82 up to 3000 rpm, or under load, I hear a rapid banging noise coming from the fan area (sounds like a machine gun!). It almost sounds as if the fan is hitting something, but it isn't. New water pump, radiator, hoses, etc. Could it be the fan clutch? Would it make a sound like this if it were going bad? Thanks!
Check for nicks all around on the inside of the shroud. When the fan hits a high RPM it may be flexing just enough to hit the shroud or pulling the shroud into it.
You might want to check the harmonic balancer for separation. When those things start to let go they can make some funny noises. Also if the timing chain gets real loose, it will hit the side of the cover.

This was my first thought........check the shroud for damage.

when you reinstalled the shroud, you may not have gotten it centered. Look for that if there arent any broken areas. Get a spotlight and hit the gas with your hand and see if you can locate any new rubbed areas.
thats what happened to my L82, the fan clutch was old and wobbly. when it reved up the fan was hitting the top of the shroud. new clutch and all is quiet.
