I need to drain and fill my 700R4. With leaks, concern that I overfilled, and need to check engagement of 'cogs/gears' in the pan, I need to know how much to put back into the trans once I drain the pan. I know it takes about 11 quarts dry but suspect less since the converter will still contain fluid when I empty the pan. I've bought six quarts so far. Just need to know the capacity for a filter/fluid change.
Ted, i changed the fluid in mine only once since installing a 700r4 from bowtieod, but i seem to recall about 5 qts or so when i refilled it. if you've got a drain plug just catch all that comes out in a pan and measure it.you could pour it into a empty gallon milk jug,or pour your new fluid in,one quart at a time, and then fill the empty quart bottles with the old fluid.if you don't have a drain plug,it can be a real messy pain in the A22 trying to catch all the fluid.why they don't put drain plugs on from the factory is just plain stupid.
Not mileage related. I don't trust the new dipstick delivered with the trans from BowTie Overdrives. It is showing way full above the full mark and only way I know to be sure of quantity in it is to drain and refill with replacement quantity of fluid. I will also re-measure/mark the dipstick (what I should have done before adding fluid; too impatient and thought the dipstick would be fine). If I could be sure the dipstick was correct length, i'd just remove a quart or two and recheck dipstick (perhaps that IS what I should do?)?

Well, it could be mileage related. I ask because you didn’t mention what car you are working on so it could be a daily driver pickup for all I know. If it was and it has high mileage it is possible to run into problems when changing the transmission fluid. Some transmissions have a tendency to slip after changing fluid. This obviously isn’t your situation so I digress.
Ted H,
I also have a 700R4 from Bowtie and started to fill the tranny according to their instructions. I put in 6 and started to turn the motor over to pump the fluid into the converter and started to put in some more. After 10 quarts I checked the level and it is way over the full cold mark. My driveshaft will be completed here soon and I will install it and FIRE the motor up let it run and check it again. Then I am going to run through the gears and see if the level drops. I also got a new tube and stick from them.
