I have a 75 vette 350 with accell ignition. I cranked it up a couple of weeks ago and it fired right up. Today I went to back it out of the garage and it would not start. It acts like it's not getting fire. I tried again 30 minutes later and it fired right up. I parked it and started it again and fired right up. I went to pull it back in this evening and it won't start. Same thing acts like its not getting fire. I can't see a spark from the plug wire to metal but if that is the case why would it fire right up after a while? Any help would be appreciated.
Well, If you don't see spark then she ain't firing at times. Next time it doesn't fire up, check the voltage at the dist. If no voltage is present there then trace it back to the switch side. If voltage is present there then check the dist side. There may be some shredded wires in the cap.
Update I got the car to start. When it did there was a loud pop. I guess I hadn't put the distributor cap on all the way. Inside of the distributor there was what I think is the rotor (like I said I don't know cars) the metal piece had spun around after breaking off small plastic tabs to keep it in place. I put the piece back like it should and the car fired right up. I put it in reverse and gave it gas and it would try to die every time I gave it gas. Any ideas?
If the cap or rotor is damaged in any way replace them and try again.
The distributor has to provide spark to each cylinder in synchronization with the compression stroke of the cylinder. If the spark occurs at the wrong time the engine will run badly or not at all. You could also have backfiring through the carb which could result in a fire. If you are not sure about what you are doing find someone to help you before you damage the engine.
My friend's vehicle the other day would start sometimes, then not other times. Turned out to be a sticking fuel pump. I got in the car and turned the ignition, while he got under the car and tapped on the fuel pump with a wrench or something. Was more like knock that a tap. Then it started.
