350 RamJet in a 79 - Request for measurement!
The body is off the frame right now but I took some measurements to see if a 350 RamJet would clear the stock hood. According to the GM catalog, the ramjet is 9.75" from the block to the top of the ramjet (reference pg. 50 of the 2007 GM Performance Part Catalog
http://www.gmperformanceparts.com/Parts/catalog.jsp
As the current engine is installed on the rolling chassis, I measure 9.5" to the top of the air cleaner. I don't know how much clearance I have to the hood (since the body is off) but I'm assuming more than 0.25". Right now it is an Edelbrock Performer intake with an Edelbrock 1406 carb with a drop base air filter (brand unkown.) I would really like to verify clearance.
Can somebody with a 78 or 79 (stock hood of course) take a measurement from the front center top of the block (which is the front center bottom side of the intake) to the bottom underside of the hood (when closed of course?) This would be the tightest point as the hood slopes down towards the front of the car. Knowing this dimension will allow me to reconcile the difference and that will tell me how much clearance (or lack of) a RamJet will have. It looks very promising!!
The question you all should ask me is: "How the heck do I measure that with the hood closed!?"
I think I would use a plyable material (playdough perhaps) and put a hunk of it at the front center of the air filter (closest point to the front of the block) and shut the hood. Then I would measure from the top of the mashed playdough down to the block. That was the easiest thing I could think of.
Thank You in advance!!!

A member of our Route 66 Corvette Club dropped a 350 RamJet in a 78 Pace Car and the stock hood fit. Just barely, but it fit.

I just checked the measurment (7 inches) from the top of the block, below the intake to the top of the edges of the hood. Given this, I would expect another 2 inches of clearence along the center area under the stock hood when closed.
I measured prior to engine removal.

I have a 81 and was looking at a RamJet. It will fit with stock hood, but it's real tight. When the motor twists at acceleration the top edge may scrape a little. What helps is new body mounts, if your are original it may not make it. You can always go L88 hood.
