Default Strut Rod Bushings- Polyurethane- Split Style-

1980 L48 Auto

I am replacing my strut rod bushings. Anyone have any experience with the polyurethane split style bushings. I do not race or anything like that. Just want a fun driver.

I think that is the way I will go in the future. I replaced mine on my '66 just over a year ago and the rubber is already cracking and splitting like it had been in there for 30 years. On my stock replacement ones in my '69, the rubber had separated from the metal center bushing, also in less than two years.

I wonder if the rubber we are getting these days is inferior to the stuff of yore. I have noticed ball joint boots splitting prematurely, as well as other rubber parts falling apart. What gives?

Ralph.

I used poly on my 77. The only thing I didn't like. The metal bushing for the camber adjustment bolt was to large I slipped another metal bushing inside the one supplied. The shock mount end was ok.

As far as the rubber we get now. It is junk. The rich and powerfull have found a way to make the parts cheaper for them. But the quality has gone in the toilet.

I've used ES brand poly in rear strut rods ... on a 71 ...installed w/ lotsa silicone grease ... no problems in any way. Like most stuff, I price out & often order stuff from way up the road ... not in this case ... ordered from local AutoZone ... they had it in a day or 2 ... I don't recall AZ's price but elsewhere couldn't have been significantly lower.

-edit-
I'm not saying this was Art's problem w/ bushing oversize ... I'm not certain exactly what it is ... but there is a difference between 82-80 strut bushings ... and 79-63 strut bushings ... I recall they're different part numbers.

.
I used the split poly on my 80 and had the same problem. I had to cut them down slightly else they will never fit into the bracket that bolts to the Diff.

The metal sleeve is supposed to be that way. You should have reused your reducing washers(4) when you put the rods back into the bracket. Those washers also make up for the slop in the bracket(front to back movement).

You can get the ES kit from Summit for quite a bit less than that. I got one from eBay for under $120, just by being patient.

Van Steel thanks for that input. I was wondering what those washers were for when I removed mine. I believe I will order a set of Polys from you guys here in the next couple of days.

Poly, it's great. I ordered mine from summit, like so many other things, and have never had a problem. Just grease them, or they squeak.

Do you need to grease them often- or just during the installation?

should only have to grease them the one time. Make sure you grease the contact surfaces of the bushing. If you ever have to pull them back off, make sure you regrease them again before puttting back.

Just once (for a long time, at least). The grease that comes with the ES kits (and is available separately at places like AutoZone) is extremely sticky and stays in place very well.
