I think the heads will hold you back. I know that BB heads are $$$ but the technology has advanced so far these days in terms of head design.
My guess is that you will see maybe 550 HP on an engine dyno. With a set of AFR or Brodix heads, you would probably easily hit 600+ HP.
I agree with Steve, my 496 has aluminum heads and an 850 carb. it makes 560 HP, (580 ft. lbs.). The dyno guy said the carb was the limiting factor.
Don't worry about it, wait till you see the torque curve. Better yet, wait till you feel it.
It is an engine dyno. I went with the ovals simply because I had them sitting around and didn't have to put much into them. They're all completely rebuilt, new guides...etc. I want to see how the ovals respond, you can always change the heads right.
I'll be building a similiar engine for my old LS-5. I am debating on going 496 or just sticking with the stock crank. I would love to know what it dyno's at and the torque curve!!
You think your nervous now, wait till you are standing there and dyno operator asks you how high you wanna go
See the video in my sig of my 406ci pulling 6500RPM and making 550HP yeeeehaaaaww
Nervous is when your pulling 7k and your motor isn't suppose to go that high and it's still pulling. Thats what happened in my 81 a few years back with the 406 I had in it. Of course that was on the track right.
Patriot Performance just started making some really nice big block aluminum heads -new design, think they're called the Freedom Series. They are shockingly cheap for now until it catches the public's eye. They're keeping the price low so more people buy them and their name gets around then the price goes up.
Patriot Freedom Series Big Block as advertised in Super Chevy.
119cc chambers
320cc as cast runners
flow 370+ @ .7lift
2.25inch / 1.88inch stainless valves
includes 0.600 inch springs, steel retainers & stainless valves
$1,299 assembled
Plus other options to customize including springs, retainers, bowl blending and porting.

Not sure why I can't find them on their website since I've seen the bbc heads advertised in every car magazine I've read.
1-423-722-5152 Skip Whites Performance is where my brother got his Patriot Freedom Series SBC heads fully worked for a great price. They're very helpful, do all their own work and ship the next day
And get you a great price. They have a lot that isn't listed on their e-bay store.

SRP pistons -about 10:1 compression
GM oval port 781's, ported with larger valves, roller rockers
Edelbrock Performer RPM intake
Demon 950
HEI ignition with a module-stock coil for now
Lunati hydraulic roller cam-241/249 at .050 in/ex with .625 lift in/ex.
292/300 adv dur.
Just curious of what you guys have to say. I had the bottom end built but I put together the rest. Wish me luck....also I'm not sure what kind of dyno it is either.
Rob
Can’t wait to see, I have just about the same motor.
496BBC
Ported 781’s with big valves
Ross pistons 10:1 comp.
Holley strip dominator
Holley 1000 CFM HP
Lunati solid roller 259/260 dur at 50 .700 lift
Accel dist with MSD HEI module with rev limiter
I dont think the factory heads will hurt you too much in ported form.
Yeah, Brodix would be better, but I have seen many 10 second cars run those heads.
With a single plane intake, that combo has 600 hp potential when its dialed in. With the Performer RPM, I will guess 580
I just noticed you are running the stock coil. That could be a problem.
If power drops off earlier than expected, look there.
Good coils are cheap. I would replace it first.

Without doing a SIM, I'm guessing 540HP at about 5500 and 570TQ at about 4400.
IMHO, a 496 is right at the crossover point where rectangle port heads become the choice for a high perf build, but the longer duration will compensate somewhat in filling the cylinders, to a point. I'm interested in seeing what your idle vac and vac signal at redline are, and what kind of manners this engine has with that much carb in combination with those oval ports and long duration. It ought to do fine, but I'm not so certain a 950 Demon is quite called for here. (This is from a guy who's committed to putting a 995-1095 King Demon RS on a big port 496.) BTW, what's the LSA and installed ILCA of that stick?
Best of luck. You should have a wide grin by day's end.

Well, what a fiasco today. It all started at 9:30am. When we initially tried to start the motor, it would go, it ended up being the MSD module in the HEI. Put on one of thier HEI's that was supposed to work. We spent hours trying to get it to do more than sputter. Changed carbs and still nothing. Put the original module back into MY distributor and bingo. We screwed with a bad HEI all that time. Well, it was 4:15 PM so we didn't get anything else done. Well, here's at least a video. It will be Monday morning when we finally finish this, right after night shift.... .
Almost there..... sounds good.
Interesting to note they have a temp sensor on every pipe.... good for ascertaining fuel distribution to EVERY cylinder.
