Hope somebody can give me some advice on this. The regulator spring on my driver door is broken. The window goes down very fast and comes up very slow. I found the broken spring in the bottom of the door. I purchased a new spring and install it, but the spring doesn't do much as far as the tension goes. Do I need to pre tension the spring before it is installed? Also does the regulator need to come out to install the spring properly? Thanks in advance for any help or tips.

Unfortunately you will probably have to remove the regulator. The spring is installed while the window is in the full up position. When you lower it the weight of the window whines the spring up so when you power the window up the unwhining of the spring helps with the up motion.
You can try to install it without the regulator out. Make sure the window is full up. I'll see if i can explain this. the spring center fits into a groove. The "J" at the outer edge of the spring grabs a round pin. You will find the "J" may not line up with the round pin when you place the spring in its seat. You will have to coil or uncoil it to hit the round pin. Its a heavy spring and not easily coiled or uncoiled by hand. If you need the gear up higher to hit the round pin you can loosen off the window stops to power the regulator higher. If its lower you can just power the window down a fraction of an inch at a time. You want to be carful though....you don't want to get your hand or arm caught in the regulator.
Here is a picture. the outer skin is off so you can see whats in there. The outer skin is not removable this is for display only....
In the picture above see how the spring fits into place? See how it has to grab the pin with the "J"? It has to be lined up properly. a good spring will be short of the pin but by releasing the window you can power the regulator up higher to get the pin passed the pin.
By the way access is through the panel at the bottom of the door. Interior door panel must come off to get the at the access panel door.
Thanks Guys,
I'm going to try it with the regulator in. But I'll probably have to remove it from the door. I don't have the muscle in one arm for the spring. Tim
Well I pulled the regulator out and put the spring on. Not a bad job really. Problem is I also installed a new outter seal and now I can't get the window adjusted correctly. The new seal is pushing the window in so much that it pushing the window in so far that it won't go up when the door is closed. The window wants to slide behind the windshield pillar weather stripping. I think the track rollers need replaced, but I not sure. There is a lot of play in the window. Any Ideas? Tim
There are many adjustments that can be made. There is a thread here somewhere that describes how. Do a search.
The in and out position is adjusted by loosening the bolts at the top of the track. The track can be moved in or out. If the glass is too tight against the pillar you need to move the track in.
I posted a thread here about the problem I had adjusting the window
after replacing the outer window seal. I had the same problem you
have in that I could not adjust the window as the seal was pushing
it inward. The new seal also put a lot more friction against the
window so it would not move easily. I finally gave up and reinstalled the original seal.
The seals I purchased are made of rubber and the rubber is wider than the originals.
They are not listed as correct reproductions.
On my post I had one response that the reproductions do fit better.
I called a leading corvette weatherstrip manufacturer and they
told me the reproductions are flocked and the replacements are
just rubber. Not sure, but I think the flocked might be the
rougher texture of the originals which lets the window slide easier
than the plain rubber.
