Ok, after careful discussion, it looks like I need to get new heads to lower
my CR down from 11-1 to something more tame so that I can eliminate detonation and open up the performance of my 383. So it is out with the
041 cast heads and in with something new. I would like some suggestions
on what heads are the best. Here is my setup:
383 stroker / Comp 270H cam / Flat top pistons on 6 inch rods / TH400
Dynomax headers / Edelbrock 600 cfm /
You should first get a good idea of what your current comp ratio is before you start making new head decisions. Did you factor in valve relief CCs or deck/piston clearance CCs when you calculated comp ratio?
Since it's not my money we're talking about, why not get some new aluminum heads with a similar chamber size. This would allow you to maintain the higher compression, but give the same results as lowering the C/R by close to a full point. Also, what is the thickness of the heads gaskets you have now? If steel shim, you can lose close to a full point by going with .039" or .041" gaskets.
How much are you willing to spend? I'm not an AFR guy but I have heard good things about the Air Flow Research 190 heads. Good torque and power. If you want to get radical you can get into 200+cc intake runners to make some real high hp numbers at the cost of a bit of torque. The Brodix Track 1 has also made a good name for itself over the years. They make a new 222cc intake runner version. Flows over 300cfm of air right out of the box.
