So I bought this 700r4 tranny off of advanced auto. It was a remanufactured tranny and I bolted it in and filled it with fluid and connected linkage and lines and every thing else. I put it in 1982 corvette by the way and fired up the motor, moved the shifter through the gears, checked the fluid to verify it was full and could not get it to go into gear at all. Linkage was working so it wasnt that. Im not a tranny machanic so is there something I did wrong or something I didnt do? I contacted the company and they more or less told me to go get screwed because I pulled the tranny with out contacting them first. Any guidance would be appreciated.

It won't shift out of park?

I'm guessing this was to replace a bad transmission, and it was the same model right?

Yes, it will shift out of park and move through all of the gears, the tranny wont kick into gear. It acts like there is no fluid in it, but it was full. When I pulled the tranny the torque converter was dry. Should that have been filled before it was put in or Should it have filled with the car running in gear?

The torque converter needed to be filled prior to installation. I don't know if this do harm, but the TC definitely needs fluid before it's installed.

Oh, I thought the TC would fill itself when running. Do you think if I filled it and put it back in it will work? Also the guy at the waranty company told me I should have adjusted the TV valve pressure. I kind of thought he was BS me though. I would have thought that any adjustments like that would have been done at the factory.

It will probably make a difference to have fluid.

The TV will not self adjust, because it depends on the linkage to your TBs. The TV must also be adjusted properly for the transmission to work, and not doing this CAN damage a transmission.

Do some research, but the best way I can tell you is you wire the throttle open all the way and make sure the TV is at full extension. The two coincide.

I will have to search the manual and see if it gives instruction on this. Thanks for your input.

I probably put that much in it, but it wouldnt kick into gear. I kept checking the fluid levels to make sure it was full but it just wouldnt kick into gear. I dont know a lot about auto trannys so I didnt know the TC hade to be filled before you put the tranny in. Im wondering if I should pick my tranny up from advanced auto and try putting it in again with fluid in the TC. Maybe there was nothing wrong with it but that.

Rickey,
If you are referring to Advance Auto Parts, they are not going to tell you to get screwed. You must not have talked to the proper person. I know because I used to work there. They couldn't care less when or how you pulled the tranny as long as the casing is not cracked when you give it to them for return of your core charge. Further, your old tranny has nothing to do with the new one as long as it is the same type.
If you can't get it functionally properly, have a pro look at it and if he can't get it going, contact the store manager at Advance Auto and request another tranny. If he balks, ask for the phone # of Customer Service at their home office in Roanoke, VA. I guarantee they will resolve the issue. They don't do business that way. Good luck.

BTW, if you want your old tranny back, you had better contact the store immediately. More than likely, the store will have a weekly pick up of such items, and depending on when you dropped it off, it could be picked up as soon as the next day if that is when their weekly pick up is scheduled. Once it's gone from the store, your chances of getting it back are extremely thin.

It wasnt advanced auto that didnt give me any help, it was the waranty dept of the company that remanufactures the trannys that advanced auto sells. I didnt get any technical support from the company just a wise a$$ that said you people dont know what your doing and went on with his rant. He could of asked questions and maybe gave some guidence instead of the remarks he made.

As Jud said though, you need to talk to Advance Auto about the problem. I would bet that Advance Auto can speak louder to the rebuilder than you can. I do not know the situation but I would think that a rebuilder would or at least should include a checklist of what needs to be checked and/or done to insure that the installation goes correctly. Was a new or rebuilt TC part of the purchase. If it was then instructions to fill it would be a no-brainer!

That is correct. You want to deal with Advance as that is where you bought it.
