Hey Glass, so 79 stick is 153? That is what I was hoping for. The centerforce website only lists 1 clutch option a 11" unit. So I kinda thought it would be 168, thanks for the info.
I don't think this is true. My 78 4-speed had the 11 inch 168 tooth flywheel.
keep in mind that if you change to the 153 tooth flywheel, I believe you will need to change the bell housing as well.
I went through the same thing (actually bought a lightweight 153 tooth flywheel and had to get rid of it). I found a used aluminum one for sale from a knowledgable forum member and went with that.
Don't forget about the clutch ball stud, the lighter flywheel will most likely be thinner than your old stock one and if you use the stock ball, your clutch might not engage/disengage fully. You will probably need to get the linger ball stud. If you do a search on my posts, gkull replied to me with the GM part number of the longer stud. Miss the stud and you will be dropping the tranny again to get it right
regardless of what year it is crawl under the car and look at the starter, if the two bolts holding it in place are staggered then its a 168 if the are not then its a 153 unless you have an after market mini-starter.
I just had it on the lift replacing a motormount and looked at the bellhousing number but can't remember, I'm sure its not 403 thats whats in my 65 and 621 didn't sound right thats what was in my 71. I'll look again when its in the air.
There are few rules when it comes to clutch sizes and bellhousings. You have to keep them together and not try to mix and match.
The factory never used an 11" clutch on a 327 but they did use both sizes on 350's and big blocks. IN VERY GENERAL TERMS most BB's use the 11" clutch with exceptions for some SHP models that used the smaller clutches. The 350's generaly use the 11" clutch but there are some exceptions where the smaller setup is used. Bottom line is you have to look at the bellhousing or starter to determine what is actualy in there now. These things have been changed over the years and it is wise to look twice and order once
In about two minutes the local rebuilder changed the end on a starter
that was against a 168 flywheel for and end to match the 153.
he just swaped out with me did not even bother charging me anything
I was not a regular customer.
