I will be putting a muncie in my 74 this spring. It has the th400 in it now. If I buy a trans mount for a four speed will it bolt right to the crossmember, or is there an adapter plate I have to use?
I have a 77 with a th350. I am not stuck on originality so I plan on installing a keisler 5 speed. I just get tired of rolling down the hwy feeling like I am in 2nd gear. My friend installed one and the kit includes everything including the mounts
I hear you flstfi. The reason im doing a muncie is because I got it from a friend cheap. If I had the cash I would definitly do the overdrive, and maybee in the future who knows. Good luck on your project.
And thanks for the info A88fxrs

One of the best investments you will ever make in your car. You will even enjoy it more if you switch from 3.08 gears to something in the order of 3.55
Can Bolt To Crossmember. Will Need Shifter Bracket, Clutch Crosshaft Bracket Welded On Frame, Pedal And Linkage. Then Change Shift Plate & Boot .
I think if you look at the earlier 78 thru 81 Clutch stud Crosshaft Bracket it is a bolt on for about $17 bucks and you will not have to weld it in place as you would with a later model yr bracket as mentioned above. Just another alternative you may want to look at.
To answer what I think was your original question, there is a large bracket that bolts onto the front of the crossmember that the actual trans mount bolts to. In order to install the bracket you'll have to weld an angle onto the front face of your crossmember to attach it. It goes on with four bolts; two down through the top and one into each side through the welded-on angle. The mount itself is the same for TH350,TH400, Muncie, or T10 transmissions. Also, if you use a Hurst shifter you can forego the shifter bracket as it bolts directly to the side of the trans. tail housing.
Why 5 speed ? why not 6 speed ? just about the same price
globey
Either or....the point was get an overdrive. The 6 speed will require some creative modifications but the 5 speeds are tried and true and there are kits already available.

Creative, shade-tree engineering to fit a 6sp and an overdrive really is the way to go but double overdrive is just that much cooler.
OT:
Rich, when are you guys going to be getting the 6sp kits back into production (or are you)?
If the problem is a shortage of T56s, can I send you my T56's tailhousing and have you do your special massaging on it?

We are actually not going to get back into this. The single biggest issue with the kit was fitment. It worked well for a couple and not others. Plus the .50 drop is typically to much for a carburated motor. They typically don't like to drop that low under load.
I personally owned 2 Camaros one Lt and one Ls. if i was in 6th gear at say 70-75 I had to drop a gear just to go up a slight hill or accelerate.
That was with a computer controlled fuel injected motor.
The 5speed has plenty of od with either .68 or .64. plus its already a well thought out kit.

omg, thank you for the link and all the info you documented on your corvette... I've been looking into doing a tranny and engine swap on my '81, and a lot of my questions just got answered.
