im currently restoring the interior of my 70 vette and i need some advise on the rear speakers. The car ha d a removable rear window so if i were to mount speakers in the back i would still need some access to the window storage. Has anyone put speakers in the back with the removable window storage functional? This is what i have now, just sony x-plod 5 1/4's and the Corvette USA 3 stereo. Also, will i need an amp or no, audio systems are not my forte!

I have no removable window, but do have speakers back there:
Left side 6x9 Right Side 6x9 Storage Area Power Amp behind seat:
The rear speakers are mounted in carpeted plywood panels that are cut to fit tightly inside those rear recesses of the wheel well. They don't take up ANY CARGO AREA space at all.
Does the amp get enough air? Looks like cooling would be a problem with the seat pressed right up against it, but I'm definitely no expert. Love how clean the installation is though.
this is what i did with mine last year, along with 4x6s in the dash. i was quite happy with the way it sounded
i didnt have time to clean up all the old crap that was under the carpet last year, but ive pulled everything out this year and im going for a cleaner look. i also decided to pick up some quality parts this time around, rather then the cheap pioneers.
the wiring is Knukonceptz 4 gauge Kolossus Fleks and Krystal Kable RCAs. beats the hell out of the 10 dollar complete amp wiring kit i bought off ebay for the original install.
ok so again, are 2 speakers in front and 2 in the rear too much or shud i go with just the 2 in the front and maybe a sub? Also if i go for 2 in the rear will i need an amp?
i wouldnt run anything off the head unit. amp everything.
ive heard alot of people say to put everything up front and nothing in the back. personally, i liked having sound coming from both infront and behind me.
If I were to do mine again I would go with SanDiegoPaul's 6x9 setup and get ajroth's sub. Then you have sound in front and back with some thump. Put your amp in the storage compartment. Just my opinion...

After installing components in the front and only one sub in the back, I have found the sound to be great. The cabin is really small, and I don't miss full range speakers in the back at all. Here's my rear setup. T-tops fit just fine.

I used a thin line (3" mounting depth) Clarion sub in a .65 cubic foot sealed enclosure with Polk Audio DB6500 6.5's in the kick panels. I put the crossovers behind the quarter panels, just behind the seats along with the seperate tweeters there as well (tweeters are mounted below head/ear level). The amp is mounted all the way back on the back wall. The sub is on the other side of the back wall. They take up very little space. When I turned on this system for the first time, I wanted to turn around and offer the guitar player a beer. It is very clean, rich and booms when I crank it up. I couldn't be happier.
Here is how I did mine, no problem with getting the t-tops in the rear or with the window tray opening.
Did you customize the rear boxes and speaker set up or were you able to find these pre-made. This is exactly the look I was seeking.
Thanks for any additional information.
