Default Oil Pan Questions

I'm changing out my leaky oil pan on my '76. It has 2 wire or tubing guides welded to the side of the pan near the passenger side motor mount, plus another attached to the pan using one of the oil pan bolts. There seems to be no use for them. Any ideas why they are there? Also, my replacement pan (used but OK) has the bottom dented in slightly, the center is in about 1/4" below the sides. Will it still clear the oil pump? Or should I scrap it and go for new? Also, how do you get 30 years of engine gunk out of your eyes ???

Regarding the oil pan dent, you might be able to carefully knock it out with a block of wood or something similar.

Thanks. That's what I plan to do. It must be a common problem, cause my existing pan has scrapes and dents in it.

Yep, a lot of these Vettes have been to Hell and back and bottoming out hitting the pan was part of it. If you've got a buddy in the auto body business, I bet he could get it to look as though it was never hit with the tools they have.

Remove the two bolts from the idler arm on the passenger side and the steering linkage will drop down far enough to get the pan off easily.

Just did this yesterday on another Forum members car. Pan drops down and back. Replace the gasket with a Fel-pro 1-piece

Replace the rear main seal while you are at it.
