Default Someone busted my lock

Someone tried to break into my car and damaged the locks. So, basically I need to replace them. The passenger side door works ok, with some superficial damage. The driver side is FUBAR to the max. Are there certain locksets that are better than others? How hard is this to replace?

Thread from CFOT for reference:

Sorry to hear of your problem. The locks are not hard replace and once the door panels are removed, you'll have easy access to them. You should be able to get a set from any Vette vendor but I would recommend staying away from Ecklers as it seems they have been selling a lot of junk recently. It's possible they're still available from GM so I'd check there first. You local parts house may also have them. Good luck and be thankful they didn't tear up more of your car.

You got off easy. I've had other cars where thieves had tried to pry the lock out with a screwdriver(or similar tool), not to mention what it did to the surrounding bodywork. I'm very glad this is a question about lock replacement, and not a bodyshop question

The vendors carry locks, or GM Sport Salvage in San Jose might have original type locks you can have re-keyed

Not sure where that comes from - you can not beat Ecklers customer service and there stuff is made by the same people that make pretty much all the stuff. I just got a ignition lock cylinder and matching door set from them for my '71 - great items.

I've bought quite a bit of stuff from them during my resto, thier stuff is just as good as the other places (chinese made) so I wouldn't knock them too much. Everyone sells the same stuff, sometime's each others.

I think a lot of the other vendors sell Ecklers fiberglass parts

the only thing i have seen is that other vendors have lower prices most of the time, and they sell the same thing made by the same people...

It comes from experience. I've been buying parts from Ecklers for over 30 years and it's not the same company any more. Further, all vendors do not sell parts from the same manufacturer. There are quite a few companies making replacement Vette parts now, particularly in China. This is really unfortunate since I am just a short distance away. Just my 2 cents. BTW, great looking car you've got there Ragtop.

A good local locksmith probably has that cylinder. It was used on more than Corvettes.

Some items from them have been good, some cheap junk. I know it gets repetitive at times but I usually post something here now to see what vendor others used and got a quality part based on their experience. Doing this I have discovered several new vendors I would never have found on my own. Most recent item from them were the cheap french locks, luckily not expensive so I didnt get really pissed off except for the time I had to spend redoing the driveshafts with a correct, heavier part from another vendor that a forum member told me about.

hell i would bet you could get lock cylinders and keys from him toot sweet.

shoot me a PM, I'd be happy to give them a call for you or take a run out there

Thanks, good to know they're still available. What did a set of 2 cost and do they have the original type GM keys?

Replacing the locks may not be too difficult. The difficulty is in getting the door panels off and the internal door items to get to the lock.

The door latch mechanism itself may have to come out to allow you to get to the lock, but I am not sure. The latch mechanism is not hard to take out, I think there are three screws that hold it in place.

here is a photo of a latch assembly that I removed. You can see a rod sticking out in the upper left corner. That is what attaches to the door lock clip itself.

Do you have a GM part number? I can't seem to find it in either the assy manual or service manual.

Advance Auto carries the brand. However, as far as this brand being equal to OEM, that's another story.

If possible, I want to get OEM. The old ones lasted 30+ years until someone busted it, but these reproductions I just have no confidence in.
