My short water pump is about a gasket's thickness away from fitting flush withthe block...THinking about taking a belt sander to it to knock it down a bit then polishing it back out.
Running a roller with cam button so dont wanna use a stamped cover...Actually dont wanna pull the whole darn motor (never been fired) and have to dick with the 1 piece pan gasket (never again unless you can drop the whole pan in the car).
Pic of the cover here. Noticed the two recesses for bolts in the middle were hitting 2 bolts in the back of the water pump, Ill change them out for some button head types....Hoping theres enough meat on this thing.
Thoughts? I really wanna keep the short pump and my deep groove pullies.
If I remember right, doubled up pump to block gaskets with button head bolts gave me the extra stretch needed. I'm using a Stewart pump, that may make a difference

I took a vertical mill to my Cloyes cast aluminum cover and used nearly flat button headed Allen bolts on the back of my water pump.
I really considered tracing out the water pump gaskets on some .060 or .080 thick sheet aluminum and cutting it out. That would be minor enough that pulley alignment would not be an issue.
I had same cover as you with stewart pump.Sanded down pump bolt heads to about half thickness.Ground and polished pump at edges of cover for clearence, not much.It fit perfect.
